New ways of being demand new ways of thinking.

At each moment, we get to choose what to take with us and what to leave behind. Moments such as this, a pandemic that stops the world from working, magnifies our opportunities to adjust our values. Making a choice means engaging the imagination to realize a new way of being in the world. A groundbreaking choice that shatters convention.

How do we want this moment to influence the next?

In Italy, the city of Milan responded to the coronavirus crisis by calling for a change that focuses on having more outdoor space. The plan includes converting 22 miles of currently paved roads that pedestrians and cyclists can use. The city’s deputy said, “We think we have to imagine Milan in a new situation.” Milan looked to their historic spirit of outdoor life — long walks, outdoor cafes, and the desire for connection beyond cars.

You are in a new situation. What of the past do you want to bring with you? What groundbreaking ideas do you have to yet realize?

There are habits, connections, gatherings, rules, and other absolutes that aren’t so certain anymore. You get to choose anything you want, imagine your new situation with an eye at pushing beyond current levels that say — “That’s just the way it is.” — You have a say at this moment. The choice is yours.

If Corona has taught us one thing, it’s the freedom to recreate this moment. With worldwide economies on hold and unemployment rates at unimaginable numbers, it’s time to push past the boundaries of what we know. The past can inform us how best to move forward. When we stretch our imagination beyond the current view, bringing beneficial values from the past, we can have groundbreaking outcomes.
