The Best Response to Unpredictability? Your Experience.
We each have had experiences in the past that prepare us to handle the unpredictability we are experiencing now.
Do you remember what it feels like as a kid when you have to get permission from Mom to play with friends? When all your hope and possibility exists just on the other side of a deep valley the size of the Grand Canyon.
The “yes” you wait for as you hold your breath will give you the permission you want, a sense of space and freedom that can only be granted by a parent.
Think back to a time when you listened to detect a change in tone of your mother’s voice that might signal and help you predict the answer she would give.
Meanwhile, you stand across from her in the kitchen, two fingers crossed behind your back as an extra measure for good luck. An added charm to persuade the powers that be to vote in your favor.
You know that her decision will affect how the rest of your Saturday afternoon will play out. Will you spread your wings and fly or land crestfallen with a thud?
What happens if Mom says “no”? All hope is temporarily lost. Freedom is forgotten as you land on your bed in a contracted ball of tears.
